The typically slow but steady progress of firstwest and secondwest towards inspiration and dedication may have a double benefit here, helping the respectful but reticent firsteast and secondeast energy develop closeness and dependability.

Western Zodiac
Aries and Taurus
Compatibility overview
Signs that are adjacent on the Western zodiac wheel, like firstwest and secondwest, are sometimes treated with scepticism by astrologers. The traditional approach is that they are a lot like real-life neighbors, seemingly having plenty in common, but in fact often wary or nervous around one another. But as the saying goes, never judge a book by its cover! In fact, the characteristics of these two signs share some important synergies, meaning there is—at least, eventually—potential for a very close connection here.

Next-door Western signs reflect what is known as a minor Semi-sextile aspect. Because the astrological year represents a life cycle beginning with Aries and ending with Pisces, adjacent signs always symbolize consecutive times of life. Here, the relationship brings together the infant-like qualities of Aries—extreme idealism and abundant energy—with the early adolescence of Taurus, which emphasises physicality and a desire to build and protect.
This metaphorical closeness in time can be a good way of understanding the challenges for this pairing. For Aries, Taurus can seem very slow off the blocks, overly cautious and rigid in their opinions. Taurus, meanwhile, may find the vigour of Aries unsettlingly wild and immature. The respective elements of these signs—Fire for Aries and Earth for Taurus—are usually thought of as more discordant than harmonious, which also tends to emphasize their differences. Indeed, the analogy of standoffish neighbors will often be an apt one, especially when these two first encounter one another. Misunderstandings and disagreements are likely to crop up regularly, and mutual frustration would not be unexpected.
Over time, however, these two signs may come to appreciate more and more how much they actually have in common. Taureans may be more subtle about it, but they can also be profoundly idealistic, and Aries love to express themselves physically as much as they love all forms of action and attention-grabbing behaviour. Perhaps more importantly, these two are often drawn together by a Peter Pan-like sense of never really growing up. This can be a uniquely bonding experience, and may perhaps be the strongest affinity between any Semi-sextile pairing. Aries' undiluted Cardinal modality matches perfectly with the more stable Fixed modality of Taurus, so when these two unite in a common cause, they are likely to find that the tensions between them can be talked out and resolved, at least with concerted effort. Sure, in some areas it is inevitable that these two will maintain a respectful distance, owing to their disparate instincts. But where they are united, these two can share great warmth as well as very effective teamwork, making this pairing ultimately something of a sleeping giant in the Western zodiac.

David E. Kelley (4/4/1956, Aries Monkey), Michelle Pfeiffer (4/29/1958, Taurus Dog) : The actor and writer/producer have been married since 1993 and have two children. At the time they met, Pfeiffer was already part way through adopting her daughter, who arrived after the couple had been dating for two months. Pfeiffer described in 2007: "I really got to see [Kelley] in a situation that certainly would separate the boys from the men. Obviously, he really rose to the occasion. We both got to see each other as parents before we progressed in our relationship together, and in a strange way, it took the pressure off us...I mean, it's a real testament to the kind of person he is, but also to the fact that sometimes the traditional way of doing things isn't always the best way."
Colin Powell (4/5/1937, Aries Ox), Linda Powell (4/30/1965, Taurus Snake) : The 65th US Secretary of State and his daughter, an actor, shared a close relationship. Colin Powell's memoir, My American Journey (2003) included this description by Linda: "My father is a gentle man, but, as a child, I remember being a little afraid of him—he was so big. He rarely raised his voice, but when he did, my heart would drop through my stomach. But I also remember once weaving a pink-and-white net around my bicycle as decoration...The net got caught in the spokes and I went flying over the handlebars. I sat stunned and crying on the asphalt. My father appeared from nowhere, scooped me up, held me close, and carried me home."
Russell Crowe (4/7/1964, Aries Dragon), Danielle Spencer (5/16/1969, Taurus Rooster) : The two actors met in 1989, and during a famously on-again, off-again relationship, married in 2003 and divorced in 2018. Spencer described in 2020: "We have a lot of respect for each other and I consider him to be a member of my family. The marriage ended, but that didn’t mean our friendship ended. We’ve had holidays together in the past and we can happily sit down and chat."
Francis Ford Coppola (4/7/1939, Aries Rabbit), Eleanor Coppola (5/4/1936, Taurus Rat) : The two filmmakers have been married since 1963 and have three children together. Eleanor Coppola has described how they approach collaboration: "Francis is very straightforward with me about what he does and doesn’t think works, and for me I have to make a choice: maybe this doesn’t work for him, but it’s what I want to say. So I think we have to […] take that attitude, we accept the sort of information coming in, the critique, and then we kind of go our own way within that. Sometimes I see something that I suggest, and he rejects [it] at the moment, and then I see it woven in later."
David Letterman (4/12/1947, Aries Pig), Jay Leno (4/28/1950, Taurus Tiger) : The two late-night talk show hosts were one-time friends who shared perhaps the most famous rivalry in television history. In 2017, Leno described: "The idea that there was a huge rift between me and Dave — yeah, of course there was. I think Dave felt really sad he didn’t get The Tonight Show. And our shows were very competitive. Whether it’s two sports teams, or two boxers, you can trash talk each other, but it doesn’t mean you don’t respect each other. I think there was a mutual admiration. It’s not that we have a lot in common — we don’t — but I think that we have a mutual admiration for each other’s ability to make each other laugh....Dave would always go about it in a funny way. There was no animosity there. Comics have a bond: You have more in common with your worst enemy if they’re a comic than you do with your best friend, because you share something that regular people just don’t get."

Ox and Rabbit
Compatibility overview
They may often be overlooked, but firsteast and secondeast have the potential share a profoundly rewarding connection. Rather than being instinctively harmonious, these two tend to be drawn to each other's talents and character, so an independent and occasionally fractious dynamic is likely. Even so, there can be great warmth here, and lasting connections between these two may prove a source of great practical and emotional strength.

The four Trine Families that shape compatibility in the Chinese zodiac—much like the elements in Western astrology—divide into two streams. The families of the Ox (with the Rooster and Snake) and the Rabbit (with the Pig and Sheep) are in different streams from each other, which does cause some very challenging matches among this group (e.g., the Ox and Sheep, or the Rabbit and Rooster). Fortunately, the Ox and Rabbit themselves avoid the most troublesome parts of this energy, which opens up many rewarding and enjoyable synergies.
The Rabbit is among the most sensitive and artistic of all signs, and the strong-willed Ox often finds great fulfillment in providing encouragement and protection for their more delicate partner. The Ox's great fortitude and force of personality mean they almost inevitably clash with others on their path to success, so the Rabbit's conciliatory, diplomatic nature is both a natural asset for the relationship, and a source of joy and reassurance for both signs. The lurking friction in the energy here may well surface around issues of power and control.
The Rabbit's artistic spirit means they can be highly resistant to being told what to do, whereas the Ox often sees taking charge as a core part of their mission in life. Thus the Rabbit may feel overborne quite frequently, while the Ox can have the impression that their generosity with time and resources is being spurned. In their heart of hearts, these two probably have quite different ideas about what an ideal relationship looks like—the Ox is instinctively driven towards building secure strongholds where their loved ones can enjoy their protection, while the Rabbit tends to be a much freer spirit, more interested in exploring widely than tying themselves down.
Fortunately, this energy is unlikely to cause long-term feuds, and there is a good chance both signs will come to accept their different value systems with admiring resignation. With suitable understanding, there is ample scope for collaboration and genuine warmth between these two, which can benefit both long into the future.

Heidi Klum (6/1/1973, Gemini Ox), Seal (2/19/1963, Pisces Rabbit) : The model and musician were married from 2005 to 2012, and had three children together. Shortly after they began their relationship, Klum told Seal she was pregnant to her previous boyfriend. Seal described in 2008: "There was a pause of about 10 seconds and I said, 'It doesn't change the way I feel about you because the fact that you are here tells me that you think a lot about me.' People have said I was such a good person, so courageous. I honestly don't see it like that. I was the lucky one." After their break-up, Klum referred to them renewing their vows each year they were married, saying: "I think I got married eight times to Seal. I thought it would be kind of, like, fun. I thought it would be a fest of love. But you know, that doesn't work either. I tried, you can't say I didn't try!"
Stephen Eckelberry (12/8/1961, Sagittarius Ox), Karen Black (7/1/1939, Cancer Rabbit) : The actor/singer/songwriter and director/editor were together from 1983 until Black's death in 2013. They married in 1987 and adopted a daughter. Describing Black's posthumous song anthology, Dreaming of You (1971–1976), Eckelberry said: "When she acted, she was a consummate character actor. She was almost so good as a character actor that it harmed her ability to be a movie star because she was so totally enveloped in the role. So here, you have an opportunity to see the real Karen. The creativity that comes straight from her. It’s not the dialogue of some screenwriter, no matter how good they may be; it’s her own. And that is the greatest thing that comes out of this for me."
Jane Fonda (12/21/1937, Sagittarius Ox), Lily Tomlin (9/1/1939, Virgo Rabbit) : The two actors have been close friends since they starred together in the movie, 9 to 5 (1980). Recently, they co-starred as the leads in the TV show Grace and Frankie (2015-2022). Fonda has described about their relationship: "Male friendships are facing outward, side-by-side, looking out, ‘Oh, look at her boobs,’ ‘God, what a great car.’ Women friendships are face-to-face, and it’s like, ‘Can you help me? I’m really lost,’ and you’ll take me into your arms. We’re not afraid to ask for help, we’re not afraid to express vulnerability [and] we just drill down to soul-level very fast." Tomlin said in 2023: "[Fonda's] always been the ‘take a leap of faith’ girl to me. I just loved her innocence and her need to make everybody OK with it, and do the right thing. And thank God I did do the movie [9 to 5]. It was a blessing."
Louis Armstrong (8/4/1901, Leo Ox), Bing Crosby (5/3/1903, Taurus Rabbit) : The jazz musician/actor and singer/actor shared a friendly relationship as two of the biggest stars in the early twentieth century. Crosby reportedly lobbied for Armstrong to receive prominent billing when they co-starred in the film, Pennies from Heaven (1936), a first for a Black actor in a mainstream movie. They later recorded the album Bing and Satchmo (1960). Although Armstrong famously said, "I’ve never been invited to the home of a movie star – not even Bing’s," Crosby wrote affectionately in the months before Armstrong's death in 1971: "I’m saddened to hear that you have been stricken again, Pops….I think of you often, and I will always recall, with pleasure, the times when we get together for an appearance, or a visit. They’re too infrequent, it seems to me, and when you get back to work, we’ll have to change all this."
Jack Nicholson (4/22/1937, Taurus Ox), Anjelica Huston (7/8/1951, Cancer Rabbit) : The two legendary actors were together for seventeen years until 1990. They co-starred in Prizzi's Honor (1985), for which Huston won an Academy Award. Nicholson continued to see other women during their relationship, and Huston wrote in her memoir, Watch Me (2014): "Occasionally, I’d find a piece of female apparel...or a trinket might get left behind in the soap dish. Sometimes I’d take to wearing the jewelry to see if anybody would come up and claim it, but that never happened." She also described: "There was a profound and devoted sense of loyalty with Jack. If he invested in you, or if he placed his heart with you, it meant something for life. Jack had a very healthy awareness and a self-approbation that you could enjoy with him. He saw the lunacy in situations and was generally at the center of it." In 1980, Nicholson said , "I certainly would say [Huston]’s the love of my life."
Daphna Kastner (4/17/1961, Aries Ox), Harvey Keitel (5/13/1939, Taurus Rabbit) : The two actors married secretly in 2001 and have a son together. Keitel has described how they first met at a party in the 1980s, but after two dinners Kastner turned him down. Seventeen years afterwards, they met again at a party and stayed together: "Seven weeks later, I was going to a film festival in Italy and I asked her to come with me. She said, 'Yes,’ and on the flight, I said, ‘What do you think about getting married?’ She gave a great answer: she said, ‘OK.'"
Gene Simmons (8/25/1949, Virgo Ox), Paul Stanley (1/20/1952, Aquarius Rabbit) : The two musicians and founding members of the band Kiss have been collaborators for over 50 years. Stanley described in 2021: "[W]e're very different, but we certainly share a pride in what we do, a work ethic...Even when things have been tough...we always were family...I'm very, very lucky to have him. And I don't necessarily agree with everything he does. But does anybody?" Simmons said in 2017: "[T]ime is the ultimate judge, and the fact that [Stanley and I have] been together, at this point for over 40 years says volumes. There have been times where I’ve been very angry and resentful — and I’m not saying momentarily — I’m saying for long periods of time. But, in time, everything falls in place and you get a better perspective — hopefully. If you don’t expect from someone what’s not possible, then you won’t be disappointed."

Final Words
The minor semi-Sextile aspect often needs a head start to find its feet, so it may take a while for firstwest and secondwest to progress beyond initial nervousness to the impactful and nourishing bond they are capable of. The influence of the firsteast and secondeast on the Chinese zodiac side will likely both aid and hinder this process, contributing a blend of caring admiration with respectful distance. Given sensitivity and perseverance, however, on balance the synergies here could lead to a bond that grows ever closer over time, yielding impressive impacts and an enjoyable, reliable bond.
