Western Zodiac
Aries and Taurus
Compatibility overview
Signs that are adjacent on the Western zodiac wheel, like firstwest and secondwest, are sometimes treated with scepticism by astrologers. The traditional approach is that they are a lot like real-life neighbors, seemingly having plenty in common, but in fact often wary or nervous around one another. But as the saying goes, never judge a book by its cover! In fact, the characteristics of these two signs share some important synergies, meaning there is—at least, eventually—potential for a very close connection here.

Next-door Western signs reflect what is known as a minor Semi-sextile aspect. Because the astrological year represents a life cycle beginning with Aries and ending with Pisces, adjacent signs always symbolize consecutive times of life. Here, the relationship brings together the infant-like qualities of Aries—extreme idealism and abundant energy—with the early adolescence of Taurus, which emphasises physicality and a desire to build and protect.
This metaphorical closeness in time can be a good way of understanding the challenges for this pairing. For Aries, Taurus can seem very slow off the blocks, overly cautious and rigid in their opinions. Taurus, meanwhile, may find the vigour of Aries unsettlingly wild and immature. The respective elements of these signs—Fire for Aries and Earth for Taurus—are usually thought of as more discordant than harmonious, which also tends to emphasize their differences. Indeed, the analogy of standoffish neighbors will often be an apt one, especially when these two first encounter one another. Misunderstandings and disagreements are likely to crop up regularly, and mutual frustration would not be unexpected.
Over time, however, these two signs may come to appreciate more and more how much they actually have in common. Taureans may be more subtle about it, but they can also be profoundly idealistic, and Aries love to express themselves physically as much as they love all forms of action and attention-grabbing behaviour. Perhaps more importantly, these two are often drawn together by a Peter Pan-like sense of never really growing up. This can be a uniquely bonding experience, and may perhaps be the strongest affinity between any Semi-sextile pairing. Aries' undiluted Cardinal modality matches perfectly with the more stable Fixed modality of Taurus, so when these two unite in a common cause, they are likely to find that the tensions between them can be talked out and resolved, at least with concerted effort. Sure, in some areas it is inevitable that these two will maintain a respectful distance, owing to their disparate instincts. But where they are united, these two can share great warmth as well as very effective teamwork, making this pairing ultimately something of a sleeping giant in the Western zodiac.

David E. Kelley (4/4/1956, Aries Monkey), Michelle Pfeiffer (4/29/1958, Taurus Dog) : The actor and writer/producer have been married since 1993 and have two children. At the time they met, Pfeiffer was already part way through adopting her daughter, who arrived after the couple had been dating for two months. Pfeiffer described in 2007: "I really got to see [Kelley] in a situation that certainly would separate the boys from the men. Obviously, he really rose to the occasion. We both got to see each other as parents before we progressed in our relationship together, and in a strange way, it took the pressure off us...I mean, it's a real testament to the kind of person he is, but also to the fact that sometimes the traditional way of doing things isn't always the best way."
Colin Powell (4/5/1937, Aries Ox), Linda Powell (4/30/1965, Taurus Snake) : The 65th US Secretary of State and his daughter, an actor, shared a close relationship. Colin Powell's memoir, My American Journey (2003) included this description by Linda: "My father is a gentle man, but, as a child, I remember being a little afraid of him—he was so big. He rarely raised his voice, but when he did, my heart would drop through my stomach. But I also remember once weaving a pink-and-white net around my bicycle as decoration...The net got caught in the spokes and I went flying over the handlebars. I sat stunned and crying on the asphalt. My father appeared from nowhere, scooped me up, held me close, and carried me home."
Russell Crowe (4/7/1964, Aries Dragon), Danielle Spencer (5/16/1969, Taurus Rooster) : The two actors met in 1989, and during a famously on-again, off-again relationship, married in 2003 and divorced in 2018. Spencer described in 2020: "We have a lot of respect for each other and I consider him to be a member of my family. The marriage ended, but that didn’t mean our friendship ended. We’ve had holidays together in the past and we can happily sit down and chat."
Francis Ford Coppola (4/7/1939, Aries Rabbit), Eleanor Coppola (5/4/1936, Taurus Rat) : The two filmmakers have been married since 1963 and have three children together. Eleanor Coppola has described how they approach collaboration: "Francis is very straightforward with me about what he does and doesn’t think works, and for me I have to make a choice: maybe this doesn’t work for him, but it’s what I want to say. So I think we have to […] take that attitude, we accept the sort of information coming in, the critique, and then we kind of go our own way within that. Sometimes I see something that I suggest, and he rejects [it] at the moment, and then I see it woven in later."
David Letterman (4/12/1947, Aries Pig), Jay Leno (4/28/1950, Taurus Tiger) : The two late-night talk show hosts were one-time friends who shared perhaps the most famous rivalry in television history. In 2017, Leno described: "The idea that there was a huge rift between me and Dave — yeah, of course there was. I think Dave felt really sad he didn’t get The Tonight Show. And our shows were very competitive. Whether it’s two sports teams, or two boxers, you can trash talk each other, but it doesn’t mean you don’t respect each other. I think there was a mutual admiration. It’s not that we have a lot in common — we don’t — but I think that we have a mutual admiration for each other’s ability to make each other laugh....Dave would always go about it in a funny way. There was no animosity there. Comics have a bond: You have more in common with your worst enemy if they’re a comic than you do with your best friend, because you share something that regular people just don’t get."

At its heart, Chinese astrology is about four Trine Families. One such family comprises the Ox and Snake (with their close ally the Rooster). The energy that unites these two emphasises determination, perseverance, and sharp acumen.
The Ox is likely to be deeply impressed by the Snake's philosophical outlook, and being typically self-assured, the Ox is comfortable allowing themselves to be seduced by the Snake's other-worldly allure. The Snake, meanwhile, is instinctively drawn to the sense of security and strength of will that defines the Ox. Hence these two are natural partners, the Ox's legendary stubbornness interweaving beautifully with the Snake's patience and occasional guile. Together, they share deeply-held values around the importance of home, privacy, and duty. Indeed, as a pair they might occasionally be accused of a certain inflexibility, given the strength of their shared convictions, which other signs with less forceful energy may find challenging to navigate.
The ability of the Ox and Snake to work as a team, calmly anticipating and evaluating opportunities, then driving success with incredible reserves of physical and intellectual power, is perhaps unrivalled in all of astrology. As good as this relationship is in times of plenty, it is often even stronger in the face of adversity—which may be its greatest quality of all.

George Clooney (5/6/1961, Taurus Ox), Amal Clooney (2/3/1978, Aquarius Snake) : One-time legendary bachelor George Clooney was reinvented as half of a world-famous couple after entering a relationship with Amal Clooney (née Alamuddin). George Clooney has described: "The truth was I met this amazing woman, and she took my breath away. She was brilliant and funny and beautiful and kind. I was sort of swept off my feet."
Nas (9/14/1973, Virgo Ox), Dr. Dre (2/18/1965, Aquarius Snake) : Collaborations between these two Hip-Hop greats have been credited with helping to ease tensions during the East Coast/West Coast rap rivalry during the 1990s.
Finneas O'Connell (7/30/1997, Leo Ox), Billie Eilish (12/18/2001, Sagittarius Snake) : The singer/songwriter and singer/songwriter/producer are sister and brother. The two have collaborated extensively, notably on Eilish's hugely successful and multi-award-winning albums When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? (2019) and Happier Than Ever (2021). In a joint interview, Connell described: "Then we were like, 'Let’s make some songs,' that kind of casual thing turned into this more serious thing, and so we had this excuse to see each other all the time. Most of the people that I’m closest to have a really close relationship with their siblings — I think that’s why I identify with them — but they just have no excuse to see them...And so I think that’s the other thing that has cemented our closeness, is just we have this excuse. It’s part of the reason I love going on tour with Billie — I have this excuse to get to spend months at a time with her." Eilish said, "We bicker so much, you would not believe it...Since we were babies, we fight all the time like siblings do. We’re so annoyed by each other and infuriated by things. But we also get along really well, and literally, no one on the earth makes me laugh the way that Finneas does. [O'CONNELL: Likewise]. I think that that part is probably the part that people say they don’t have with their siblings, which makes me sad because it’s the most amazing part of my life."
Sam Peckinpah (2/21/1925, Pisces Ox), Begoña Palacios (12/28/1941, Capricorn Snake) : The Mexican actor and famously troubled US director were married and divorced three times. Their daughter Lupita recalled, "They were so in love with each other but they were two people who couldn't be together but couldn't be separate. There was a lot of passion and love between them. She lived in the past and agonised about losing him. My mother always respected my father very much and she always told me great and beautiful things about him."
Dave Chappelle (8/24/1973, Virgo Ox), Chris Rock (2/7/1965, Aquarius Snake) : The two comedians are good friends who have expressed mutual admiration and appeared together on stage multiple times. Rock has described: "There was like a couple shows that were just me and Dave on stage for like two hours. He would call up my road manager, like, 'I'm coming.' ...I just love Dave, and I look at it like [Jean-Michel] Basquiat and [Andy] Warhol and we’re just collaborating."
Heidi Klum (6/1/1973, Gemini Ox), Tom Kaulitz (9/1/1989, Virgo Snake) : The model/entertainer/businesswoman and musician married in 2019. Kaulitz is Klum's third husband, and she has four children from previous relationships. She has described: "For the first time, [in Kaulitz] I have a partner who I can discuss everything with. Someone who shares duties that we all have in our life."
Jeff Bridges (12/4/1949, Sagittarius Ox), Beau Bridges (12/9/1941, Sagittarius Snake) : The two brothers are both screen actors, part of a dynasty with father Lloyd Bridges. In 2014, they appeared on stage together at a sold-out event entitled, "Beau and Jeff: A Tale of Two Bridges". Jeff has described their relationship and shared profession by saying, "It’s not a competition. It’s like we’re on the same team."

Given the time they need, these two could forge a connection as deeply nourishing as it is powerfully strong.
