Taurus and Aries
Compatibility overview
Signs that are adjacent on the Western zodiac wheel, like firstwest and secondwest, are sometimes treated with scepticism by astrologers. The traditional approach is that they are a lot like real-life neighbors, seemingly having plenty in common, but in fact often wary or nervous around one another. But as the saying goes, never judge a book by its cover! In fact, the characteristics of these two signs share some important synergies, meaning there is—at least, eventually—potential for a very close connection here.

Next-door Western signs reflect what is known as a minor Semi-sextile aspect. Because the astrological year represents a life cycle beginning with Aries and ending with Pisces, adjacent signs always symbolize consecutive times of life. Here, the relationship brings together the infant-like qualities of Aries—extreme idealism and abundant energy—with the early adolescence of Taurus, which emphasises physicality and a desire to build and protect.
This metaphorical closeness in time can be a good way of understanding the challenges for this pairing. For Aries, Taurus can seem very slow off the blocks, overly cautious and rigid in their opinions. Taurus, meanwhile, may find the vigour of Aries unsettlingly wild and immature. The respective elements of these signs—Fire for Aries and Earth for Taurus—are usually thought of as more discordant than harmonious, which also tends to emphasize their differences. Indeed, the analogy of standoffish neighbors will often be an apt one, especially when these two first encounter one another. Misunderstandings and disagreements are likely to crop up regularly, and mutual frustration would not be unexpected.
Over time, however, these two signs may come to appreciate more and more how much they actually have in common. Taureans may be more subtle about it, but they can also be profoundly idealistic, and Aries love to express themselves physically as much as they love all forms of action and attention-grabbing behaviour. Perhaps more importantly, these two are often drawn together by a Peter Pan-like sense of never really growing up. This can be a uniquely bonding experience, and may perhaps be the strongest affinity between any Semi-sextile pairing. Aries' undiluted Cardinal modality matches perfectly with the more stable Fixed modality of Taurus, so when these two unite in a common cause, they are likely to find that the tensions between them can be talked out and resolved, at least with concerted effort. Sure, in some areas it is inevitable that these two will maintain a respectful distance, owing to their disparate instincts. But where they are united, these two can share great warmth as well as very effective teamwork, making this pairing ultimately something of a sleeping giant in the Western zodiac.

David E. Kelley (4/4/1956, Aries Monkey), Michelle Pfeiffer (4/29/1958, Taurus Dog) : The actor and writer/producer have been married since 1993 and have two children. At the time they met, Pfeiffer was already part way through adopting her daughter, who arrived after the couple had been dating for two months. Pfeiffer described in 2007: "I really got to see [Kelley] in a situation that certainly would separate the boys from the men. Obviously, he really rose to the occasion. We both got to see each other as parents before we progressed in our relationship together, and in a strange way, it took the pressure off us...I mean, it's a real testament to the kind of person he is, but also to the fact that sometimes the traditional way of doing things isn't always the best way."
Colin Powell (4/5/1937, Aries Ox), Linda Powell (4/30/1965, Taurus Snake) : The 65th US Secretary of State and his daughter, an actor, shared a close relationship. Colin Powell's memoir, My American Journey (2003) included this description by Linda: "My father is a gentle man, but, as a child, I remember being a little afraid of him—he was so big. He rarely raised his voice, but when he did, my heart would drop through my stomach. But I also remember once weaving a pink-and-white net around my bicycle as decoration...The net got caught in the spokes and I went flying over the handlebars. I sat stunned and crying on the asphalt. My father appeared from nowhere, scooped me up, held me close, and carried me home."
Russell Crowe (4/7/1964, Aries Dragon), Danielle Spencer (5/16/1969, Taurus Rooster) : The two actors met in 1989, and during a famously on-again, off-again relationship, married in 2003 and divorced in 2018. Spencer described in 2020: "We have a lot of respect for each other and I consider him to be a member of my family. The marriage ended, but that didn’t mean our friendship ended. We’ve had holidays together in the past and we can happily sit down and chat."
Francis Ford Coppola (4/7/1939, Aries Rabbit), Eleanor Coppola (5/4/1936, Taurus Rat) : The two filmmakers have been married since 1963 and have three children together. Eleanor Coppola has described how they approach collaboration: "Francis is very straightforward with me about what he does and doesn’t think works, and for me I have to make a choice: maybe this doesn’t work for him, but it’s what I want to say. So I think we have to […] take that attitude, we accept the sort of information coming in, the critique, and then we kind of go our own way within that. Sometimes I see something that I suggest, and he rejects [it] at the moment, and then I see it woven in later."
David Letterman (4/12/1947, Aries Pig), Jay Leno (4/28/1950, Taurus Tiger) : The two late-night talk show hosts were one-time friends who shared perhaps the most famous rivalry in television history. In 2017, Leno described: "The idea that there was a huge rift between me and Dave — yeah, of course there was. I think Dave felt really sad he didn’t get The Tonight Show. And our shows were very competitive. Whether it’s two sports teams, or two boxers, you can trash talk each other, but it doesn’t mean you don’t respect each other. I think there was a mutual admiration. It’s not that we have a lot in common — we don’t — but I think that we have a mutual admiration for each other’s ability to make each other laugh....Dave would always go about it in a funny way. There was no animosity there. Comics have a bond: You have more in common with your worst enemy if they’re a comic than you do with your best friend, because you share something that regular people just don’t get."

The four Trine Families that underlie Chinese astrology—like the elements in Western astrology—are composed of two compatible pairs. One such pair comprises the family of the Horse (with the Dog and Tiger) and that of the Pig (with the Rabbit and Sheep). These two families together include some of the most precious combinations in the whole Chinese zodiac, and while the pairing of Horse and Pig is not always singled out for special attention, the surrounding good fortune creates some seriously favourable conditions for success.
The Horse is famously free-spirited and driven to make their mark, but they tend to have strongly altruistic impulses and detest compromise. Hence they are likely to find much to admire in the usually selfless, generous Pig, and can find themselves fitting comfortably into a rewarding, often protective, role in the relationship. The Pig, for their part, tends to be at their best when they can relax, knowing that their trusting nature will not be taken advantage of. The strength and upstanding qualities of the Horse can therefore provide the Pig with an invaluable sense security, helping them to avoid profligacy and channel their usually prodigious talents into nourishing opportunities.
There is a certain separateness about this energy, which at times may be more conducive to mutual respect and camaraderie than dying-in-a-ditch-together closeness. The Pig tends to be a kindly and homely spirit by nature, and they may find the intensity of the Horse blows their hair back a bit more than they can assuredly handle. The Horse has a dyed-in-the-wool need for independence that can make others feel at a distance—they may sometimes have a sense that the Pig needs more from them than they are willing to provide. Such challenges, however, may prove easy to manage in the right circumstances.
The bottom line is that the desirable characteristics of these two signs are potentially very harmonious, and with strategies in place to manage any passing feelings of neglect or excess, these two can achieve great things in a wide variety of contexts.

Greg Wise (5/15/1966, Taurus Horse), Emma Thompson (4/15/1959, Aries Pig) : The two actors have been in a relationship since 1995, and married in 2003. They have two children (one adopted). Thompson has described: "I think people in long, happy marriages tell a lot of fibs like ‘Yes, it’s been marvelous!’, whereas I say ‘No, sometimes it’s been awful’. I hope it carries on, but we don’t know. We say ‘Well, this is nice, isn’t it?’ We don’t take anything for granted."
Elissa Durwood Grodin (18 April 1954, Aries Horse), Charles Grodin (4/21/1935, Taurus Pig) : The actor/comedian/author and writer/journalist were married from 1983 until Grodin's death in 2021, and had two children. They met for the first time when Durwood interviewed Grodin in 1982, and at the end he famously proposed. Durwood described later: "[Grodin's] a help in every way. Above all, he's a good man. I have a happy life with him. He's been very helpful with career stuff. Supportive and full of goodness...You know what? I was expecting [him to propose]. I know it sounds weird, but there you go. We were star-crossed. We really hit it off. It was a deep connection...I just said yes. And a year later we were married. It's been fabulous. We've been married for thirty years."
Jerry Seinfeld (4/29/1954, Taurus Horse), Larry David (7/2/1947, Cancer Pig) : The two comedian/actor/writers famously co-created and collaborated for seven seasons on the hugely successful TV show, Seinfeld (1989-1998). According to the book by Jennifer Keishin Armstrong, Seinfeldia (2017), Seinfeld approached David for help while developing the show in 1988. In an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm (2000- ), which consists of largely improvised dialogue, Seinfeld said to David, "How many years did we work together? We would get so tired, we spent so many hours together. We would divulge the most intimate details of our personal lives, right? [David: Right.] Like twins in a womb, right? That's how we did this show. [David: Right.]"
Samuel Beckett (4/13/1906, Aries Horse), Suzanne Dechevaux-Dumesnil (1/7/1900, Capricorn Pig) : The celebrated writer and pianist began an affair in the 1930s and married in 1961. They were died within months of each other in 1989, and are buried together in Paris. Professor of Drama at Trinity College Dublin, Nicholas Johnson, has described: "[Dechevaux-Dumesnil] is very under-represented in the scholarship about Beckett. Her impact on the work is absolutely enormous. Just in practical terms, it was Suzanne who goes to the publishers with his novels when they come back to Paris, so she acts like an agent really at a time when he doesn't seem capable of self-promotion. So I think she was probably quite forceful and functional in ways."
Aaliyah (1/16/1979, Capricorn Horse), Missy Elliott (7/1/1971, Cancer Pig) : The two singers were close friends and collaborators, with Elliott contributing more than half of the songs on Aaliyah's album, One in a Million (1996). Writing after Aaliyah's tragic death in a plane crash in 2001, Elliott described: "[It was like [Aaliyah] was my little sister. We would hang out, go shopping together, or she would come to my house or we’d hang out in the studio. Our relationship went beyond the work we did together. We felt we had created a new sound, but it wasn’t like we just did records and that was it. It was more of a family vibe than just work. We could tell each other anything."
Zoe Saldana (6/19/1978, Gemini Horse), Mila Kunis (8/14/1983, Leo Pig) : The two actors share a strong friendship, and have collaborated in the films, Get Over It (2001), After Sex (2007), and Blood Ties (2013). Speaking in 2018, at the ceremony for Soldana receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Kunis described: "When [Soldana] loves, she is all in. She’s all-in for her family, her friends and all-in for her work. I admire you as a person, a wife, a mother, a sister, a businesswoman and as an actress. While the world knows you for the characters you have played, I have the privilege of knowing the working mom behind the scenes...She is loud. Like, no joke, her superpower is volume. Walk into Zoe’s house and they are screaming, in English, in Spanish, in Italian. It is the loudest love you’ll ever receive in your life. The loudest love I’ve ever heard."
