Western Zodiac
Gemini and Scorpio
Compatibility overview
The mysterious combination of firstwest and secondwest has sometimes been looked at doubtfully by Western astrologers. Conventional thinking was that these signs are so different, so seemingly disconnected, that they have almost nothing in common. In fact, however, these contrasting personalities can combine to achieve astonishing creativity and an intimate, lasting bond.

Western zodiac signs that are five steps apart, like Gemini and Scorpio, form a Quincunx (or inconjunct) aspect. Right from the start, this so-called minor influence—one of only two, with the Semi-sextile—gives this relationship a somewhat shapeless character, one that can be liberating, confusing, or both.
To be sure, there are some striking differences here. Gemini is an Air sign, a freedom-loving traveler, with a keen intellectual interest in just about anything and everything. Water sign Scorpio, by contrast, is a powerful, often brooding soul, known for their deep emotions and undeniable force of will. Air and water are generally more conflictive than harmonious. Hence Gemini's instincts can often seem flighty and distracting to the serious-minded Scorpio, while Scorpio's intensity can try Gemini's patience, and make them feel closed-in or exhausted. These signs are both known for their tempers when roused, too, so differences of opinion could produce some spectacular fireworks!
The beguiling energy of the Quincunx, however, means the differences here are often experienced with enjoyment, even fascination. Sexual chemistry is likely. The atmosphere of mutual puzzlement may be more likely to produce humor or banter than crossness or aggression. The secret weapon of this relationship, indeed, is the two signs' deeply compatible modalities.
Scorpio have their Fixed nature to thank for their determination and impact, while Gemini's more reflective Mutable personality means they are ever alert to consequences, implications, and effects. Thus, provided their differences are sensitively managed—independence and kindness will probably be essential—teamwork between these two can be startlingly effective. Creativity may prove especially fulfilling and effective, but any shared endeavor that harnesses their differences into common goals will be marked for success. Problems and resentments should be dealt with quickly, as Quincunx energy is known to become restless if not tended to regularly.
With good communication these surprising allies may find their relationship a wonderful source of warmth and achievement.

Eve Ensler (5/25/1953, Gemini Snake), Dylan McDermott (10/26/1961, Scorpio Ox) : The actor and playwright forged a powerfully supportive bond when Ensler adopted McDermott during her marriage to his father, Richard McDermott. Dylan McDermott described in 2014, "My theory is that all you need is one person to believe in you, and you can do anything ... [Ensler] saw something in me that I never saw in myself and she said, 'you're an actor,' when I was 15 years old." Dylan, whose birth name is Mark, changed his name after Ensler suffered a miscarriage; he explained, "I changed my name to the baby's name they had chosen out of my love for her." Ensler said in 1999, "I always wanted [Dylan] to know he had a mother...Loving Dylan was central to me learning how to be a loving human being."
Alanis Morissette (6/1/1974, Gemini Tiger), Ryan Reynolds (10/23/1976, Scorpio Dragon) : The actor and singer started dating in 2002, and were engaged from 2004 to 2007. During the relationship, Morrisette described, "We have the perfect combination of compatibility and incompatibility that makes the relationship very passionate. It’s perfect. I think it’s about stretching each other," and that, "[Reynolds is] just such a supportive creature. I feel so loved by him, in a trampoline kind of way. He’s always very happy for me." After their break-up, she said: "I’ve been on a constant journey toward finally surrendering and hitting the rock bottom that I’ve been avoiding my whole life. So this was a huge, critical juncture for me. Everything broke, and it was an amazing and horrifying time."
Kendrick Lamar (6/17/1987, Gemini Rabbit), SZA (11/8/1989, Scorpio Snake) : The rapper and singer/songwriter share a supportive friendship, and have collaborated multiple times, including on the tracks, "Babylon" (2014), "untitled 04 | 08.14.2014." (2014), "Doves In The Wind" (2017), and "All The Stars" (2018)—the last being nominated for an Academy Award in 2019. In 2014, Lamar described: "SZA’s got the skill, confidence, hunger and courage to revive a sound that’s been lost. Her substance and abstract concepts have the ability to make a lifetime connection that hasn’t been around since Erykah Badu’s Baduizm or Jay Z’s In My Lifetime. A true artist at heart, one hunnit." When Lamar was criticized for lyrics including, "Show me something natural like a— with some stretch marks," SZA responded: "How is that misogyny if he’s supporting positive body image? I think that’s so weird, and it’s reaching. If you want to support women, you should support all shapes of women. I used to be 200 pounds, and I have stretch marks all over my body. I find more comfort and solace with Kendrick reinforcing that I'm beautiful. I don’t really feel anything misogynistic from that."
Frank Drake (5/28/1930, Gemini Horse), Carl Sagan (11/9/1934, Scorpio Dog) : The two astrophysicists were both professors at Cornell University. As Drake described in his book, Is Anyone Out There? (1992), "[E]vents conspir[ed] to bring us together as lifelong colleagues." Among their many collaborations, they worked together on the so-called, "Pioneer plaque", a metal plaque sent into space in 1972/1973, which was intended to notify possible extraterrestrial beings about humankind. Drake described: "Carl asked me to work with him on the message. The next session of the astronomical meeting was almost ready to begin. Participants bustled past us with empty cups and saucers...The ‘Yes, of course’ wasn’t even out of my mouth before the two of us started firing ideas at each other about what we would include…We could even make line drawings of human figures—and we immediately agreed to do so. In the next moment, we hit on the idea of a galactic map that would pinpoint the location of the Earth in space."
Jill Biden (6/3/1951, Gemini Rabbit), Joe Biden (11/20/1942, Scorpio Horse) : The U.S. President and First Lady married in 1977. They met after Joe Biden's first wife and their daughter were killed in an automobile accident, and faced tragedy again when Joe Biden's son from his first marriage, Beau, died of brain cancer in 2015. In a joint interview during his presidency, Joe Biden said in 2021: "[Jill] has a backbone like a ramrod. Everybody says marriage is 50/50. Well, sometimes you have to be 70/30. Thank God that when I'm really down, she steps in, and when she's really down, I'm able to step in." Jill said, "All that we've been through together — the highs, the lows and certainly tragedy and loss — there's that quote that says sometimes you become stronger in the fractured places. That's what we try to achieve."

The Rabbit and Snake may encounter both powerful affinities and tensions in this energy match.
At the heart of the Chinese zodiac is the concept of the four Trine Families, which naturally divide into two streams. The families of the Rabbit (with the Pig and Sheep) and the Snake (with the Ox and Rooster) belong to different streams, which contributes an underlying instability to their connection. However, while there are some seriously challenging matches between their families (e.g., the Rabbit and Rooster, or the Snake and Pig), the Rabbit and Snake manage to avoid the most disturbing aspects of this surrounding energy.
These two signs share some powerful affinities. The Rabbit is instinctively an artist, highly sensitive and attuned to the emotional realm, and these traits resonate profoundly with the deep-thinking, philosophically-minded Snake. The Snake exudes sensuality and usually possesses an other-worldly attractiveness that can be powerfully captivating for the imaginative, impressionable Rabbit. Indeed, it is perhaps the mutual appreciation of beauty that binds these signs together most strongly, and they often feel deeply protective towards each other, as if the preciousness of the other sign is something that should be carefully guarded and shielded from harm.
Tensions are likely to surface around issues of freedom and resources. The Rabbit usually seeks to avoid drama at all costs, while the Snake can be terribly vulnerable to jealousy, so these two are at risk of a vicious circle where the Snake's possessiveness moves the Rabbit to wander, which makes the Snake yet more possessive. One of the Snake's great strengths is their pragmatism and skill in shaping social dynamics, which the more innocent-minded Rabbit may interpret as manipulative or untrustworthy. These pressures on the relationship may be quite emotionally fraught, given the soulful nature of these signs' initial connection. It may take some time for them to reconcile themselves to the kind of independent and respectful distance that in fact enables their relationship to function best.
With that said, the Rabbit and Snake will rarely, if ever, lose the sense of aesthetic admiration that unites them, and there are strong prospects for an enduring and stirring relationship long into the future.

Kendrick Lamar (6/17/1987, Gemini Rabbit), Dr. Dre (2/18/1965, Aquarius Snake) : The rapper/producer and rapper have shared a mentoring friendship, including working together on Dre's as-yet-unreleased album, Detox. Lamar described in 2011: "Dre and I have a personal relationship. In the first studio session, we clicked so crazy. It was more like a uncle-nephew kind of vibe. Because everybody sees Dre as just a gangsta rapper, but he shares the same story that I have, a good kid in a mad city. When we sit in the studio, we talk about these different streets that we both lived on and experiences he had that I can relate to being two generations younger. I think that’s why people attach it so strongly because of the chemistry that we have outside the studio....Being under him and watching the passion, the same type of feel he has since the first early days of N.W.A., it’s crazy. It makes me go harder."
Blake Lively (8/25/1987, Virgo Rabbit), Taylor Swift (12/13/1989, Sagittarius Snake) : The music superstar and actor/director made friends in 2015. They have traded frequent affectionate social media posts and attended parties together. Michael Jordan (2/17/1963, Aquarius Rabbit), Scottie Pippen (9/25/1965, Leo Snake) : The two celebrated basketballers formed one of the most successful pairings in NBA history, leading the Chicago Bulls to "three-peat" championships between 1990-1993 and 1995-1998. Pippen has described the closeness of their relationship at that time, saying: "[Jordan and I] grew up together and we defended each other. That respect we had on the court, that competitiveness we took through to the top – it was special. That was the respect we had for each other, because we had to be on the court to do what we did. We had to be dominant." Following the Jordan-led documentary, The Last Dance (2020), Pippen has expressed frustration on multiple occasions. In 2020, he said: "I don’t think [The Last Dance] was that accurate in terms of really defining what was accomplished in one of the greatest eras of basketball, but also by two of the greatest players...I thought it was more about Michael trying to uplift himself and to be glorified. I think it also backfired to some degree in that people got a chance to see what kind of personality Michael had."
Frank Sinatra (12/12/1915, Sagittarius Rabbit), Dean Martin (6/7/1917, Gemini Snake) : The two legendary singer/actors were friends who formed part of the so-called "Rat Pack" in the 1960s. They toured together frequently and co-starred in films including Ocean’s 11 (1960) and Robin and the 7 Hoods (1964). Sinatra was reportedly "too overwrought" to attend Martin's funeral in 1995, but he released a statement saying, "Dean was my brother — not through blood but through choice. Good times and bad, we were there together."

Final Words
Frequently as mysterious to the signs themselves as to outsiders, the Quincunx connection between firstwest and secondwest has the potential to translate ostensibly dramatic differences into a stimulating and exciting connection. This quality of enchantment may be especially useful here, for although the firsteast and secondeast can rely on each other for admiration and kindheartedness, they may need some help developing close trust and affection.
