Compatibility
Aries Tiger and Taurus Dragon

The typically slow but steady progress of firstwest and secondwest towards inspiration and dedication may have a double benefit here, helping the respectful but reticent firsteast and secondeast energy develop closeness and dependability.

Aries and Taurus

Compatibility overview

Signs that are adjacent on the Western zodiac wheel, like firstwest and secondwest, are sometimes treated with scepticism by astrologers. The traditional approach is that they are a lot like real-life neighbors, seemingly having plenty in common, but in fact often wary or nervous around one another. But as the saying goes, never judge a book by its cover! In fact, the characteristics of these two signs share some important synergies, meaning there is—at least, eventually—potential for a very close connection here.

Next-door Western signs reflect what is known as a minor Semi-sextile aspect. Because the astrological year represents a life cycle beginning with Aries and ending with Pisces, adjacent signs always symbolize consecutive times of life. Here, the relationship brings together the infant-like qualities of Aries—extreme idealism and abundant energy—with the early adolescence of Taurus, which emphasises physicality and a desire to build and protect.

This metaphorical closeness in time can be a good way of understanding the challenges for this pairing. For Aries, Taurus can seem very slow off the blocks, overly cautious and rigid in their opinions. Taurus, meanwhile, may find the vigour of Aries unsettlingly wild and immature. The respective elements of these signs—Fire for Aries and Earth for Taurus—are usually thought of as more discordant than harmonious, which also tends to emphasize their differences. Indeed, the analogy of standoffish neighbors will often be an apt one, especially when these two first encounter one another. Misunderstandings and disagreements are likely to crop up regularly, and mutual frustration would not be unexpected.

Over time, however, these two signs may come to appreciate more and more how much they actually have in common. Taureans may be more subtle about it, but they can also be profoundly idealistic, and Aries love to express themselves physically as much as they love all forms of action and attention-grabbing behaviour. Perhaps more importantly, these two are often drawn together by a Peter Pan-like sense of never really growing up. This can be a uniquely bonding experience, and may perhaps be the strongest affinity between any Semi-sextile pairing. Aries' undiluted Cardinal modality matches perfectly with the more stable Fixed modality of Taurus, so when these two unite in a common cause, they are likely to find that the tensions between them can be talked out and resolved, at least with concerted effort. Sure, in some areas it is inevitable that these two will maintain a respectful distance, owing to their disparate instincts. But where they are united, these two can share great warmth as well as very effective teamwork, making this pairing ultimately something of a sleeping giant in the Western zodiac.

David E. Kelley and Michelle Pfeiffer

David E. Kelley (4/4/1956, Aries Monkey), Michelle Pfeiffer (4/29/1958, Taurus Dog) : The actor and writer/producer have been married since 1993 and have two children. At the time they met, Pfeiffer was already part way through adopting her daughter, who arrived after the couple had been dating for two months. Pfeiffer described in 2007: "I really got to see [Kelley] in a situation that certainly would separate the boys from the men. Obviously, he really rose to the occasion. We both got to see each other as parents before we progressed in our relationship together, and in a strange way, it took the pressure off us...I mean, it's a real testament to the kind of person he is, but also to the fact that sometimes the traditional way of doing things isn't always the best way."

Colin Powell (4/5/1937, Aries Ox), Linda Powell (4/30/1965, Taurus Snake) : The 65th US Secretary of State and his daughter, an actor, shared a close relationship. Colin Powell's memoir, My American Journey (2003) included this description by Linda: "My father is a gentle man, but, as a child, I remember being a little afraid of him—he was so big. He rarely raised his voice, but when he did, my heart would drop through my stomach. But I also remember once weaving a pink-and-white net around my bicycle as decoration...The net got caught in the spokes and I went flying over the handlebars. I sat stunned and crying on the asphalt. My father appeared from nowhere, scooped me up, held me close, and carried me home."

Danielle Spencer and Russell Crowe

Russell Crowe (4/7/1964, Aries Dragon), Danielle Spencer (5/16/1969, Taurus Rooster) : The two actors met in 1989, and during a famously on-again, off-again relationship, married in 2003 and divorced in 2018. Spencer described in 2020: "We have a lot of respect for each other and I consider him to be a member of my family. The marriage ended, but that didn’t mean our friendship ended. We’ve had holidays together in the past and we can happily sit down and chat."

Francis Ford Coppola (4/7/1939, Aries Rabbit), Eleanor Coppola (5/4/1936, Taurus Rat) : The two filmmakers have been married since 1963 and have three children together. Eleanor Coppola has described how they approach collaboration: "Francis is very straightforward with me about what he does and doesn’t think works, and for me I have to make a choice: maybe this doesn’t work for him, but it’s what I want to say. So I think we have to […] take that attitude, we accept the sort of information coming in, the critique, and then we kind of go our own way within that. Sometimes I see something that I suggest, and he rejects [it] at the moment, and then I see it woven in later."

David Letterman and Jay Leno

David Letterman (4/12/1947, Aries Pig), Jay Leno (4/28/1950, Taurus Tiger) : The two late-night talk show hosts were one-time friends who shared perhaps the most famous rivalry in television history. In 2017, Leno described: "The idea that there was a huge rift between me and Dave — yeah, of course there was. I think Dave felt really sad he didn’t get The Tonight Show. And our shows were very competitive. Whether it’s two sports teams, or two boxers, you can trash talk each other, but it doesn’t mean you don’t respect each other. I think there was a mutual admiration. It’s not that we have a lot in common — we don’t — but I think that we have a mutual admiration for each other’s ability to make each other laugh....Dave would always go about it in a funny way. There was no animosity there. Comics have a bond: You have more in common with your worst enemy if they’re a comic than you do with your best friend, because you share something that regular people just don’t get."

Tiger and Dragon

Compatibility overview

Bringing together the two most regal signs in the Eastern zodiac, the combination of firsteast and secondeast is not classically thought of as a completely perfect match. If they can balance their respective drives for success, however, they may find they share a surprisingly strong foundation for respect, teamwork, and chemistry.

Tiger and Dragon - Relationship Horoscope

These two majestic signs are associated with some of the most desirable traits in the Eastern zodiac, so it is often assumed they will form a natural partnership. Certainly there is a good chance of intense excitement and admiration. They share a fierce independence, as well as stunningly impressive physical and mental prowess. Both are likely to perceive the other as a worthy partner, opponent, or both! The Tiger will be amazed by their friend's capacity to take the lead, perform, and dominate where necessary. The Dragon, meanwhile, will respect how the Tiger inspires others with noble and original achievement. Rousing synergies are probable, whether in the professional, familial, or sexual sphere.

After a time, these two will need to turn their attention to the elephant in the room—neither expects to play second fiddle. The respective Trine families (which for the Dragon includes the Monkey and Rat, and for the Tiger, the Dog and Horse) share some unsettling cross-currents. Indeed, some of the matches in this group have an especially prickly reputation, such as the Dragon and Dog, or the Tiger and Monkey. The Dragon and Tiger may avoid the most confrontational aspects of this energy, but there is still tension to be dealt with. For example, the Tiger may find the Dragon relentlessly performative, where the Tiger prefers a balance of exertion and relaxation. The Tiger's instinct for independence is moderated by a desire for commitment that may seem foreign, even cloying, to the spirited Dragon. Morally, the Dragon tends to prioritize achievement and impact above all else, whereas for the Tiger, any compromise to their ethical beliefs (which may be highly individual) is anathema.

Above all, these signs will both tend to take a my-way-or-the-highway approach, expecting to lead the partnership in whatever direction they decide. Resolving this potential for competitive conflict will be imperative to sustaining the relationship. If that can be managed, however, then there is such an abundance of winning talents and force of personality here that an incredibly effective alliance may result, rich in material prospects, and united by a strong emotional bond.

Emilio Estevez and Martin Sheen

Emilio Estevez (5/12/1962, Taurus Tiger), Martin Sheen (8/3/1940, Leo Dragon) : The actor and actor/filmmaker are father and son. They have worked together multiple times, including on the films Badlands (1973), The Custody of Strangers (1992, TV), The War at Home (1996), Bobby (2006), and The Way (2010). Sheen has described about their connection: "You know, I don’t know myself without him. Our relationship — it’s sacramental… I was 21 when he was born, and so something very, very, kind of, mysterious happened with his birth… I’m looking at him, and it was like, ‘Oh, you’re the guy. I knew this was going to happen. I kinda knew you’d get here. And I see you’re the one. Okay, good. Welcome… Our relationship will develop.’ And it did. It wasn’t always pleasant. It wasn’t always easy. But we were teachers for each other."

John Schlesinger (2/16/1926, Aquarius Tiger), Julie Christie (4/14/1940, Aries Dragon) : The actor and director worked together extensively, including on the films, Billy Liar (1963), Darling (1965), and Far From the Madding Crowd (1967). After Schlesinger died in 2003, Christie wrote: "I remember an extremely provocative, mischievous character...When I auditioned for a part in Billy Liar in 1962, he did not think much of me as an actress - and took great relish in telling me so. I was not his first choice for the part and I was cast only after filming had started, but I am very grateful he took a chance on me...John thought I was a cultural snob, another thing that he always delighted in pointing out to me, particularly when I expressed horror at some of the films he liked and which I thought were dreadful...I will miss having a friend around with such a gift for shocking people out of their complacency."

Ron Perlman and Guillermo del Toro

Ron Perlman (4/13/1950, Aries Tiger), Guillermo del Toro (10/9/1964, Libra Dragon) : The actor and director have collaborated on multiple films, including Cronos (1993), Blade II (2002), Hellboy (2004), Hellboy II (2008), Pacific Rim (2013), and Nightmare Alley (2021). Perlman has described: "I had lost my whole sense of direction, and then I get this letter from Guillermo...identifying my work in all of these movies I didn’t think anybody saw. It’s the most beautiful, complimentary letter and, on top of that, he says, ‘I’m a young Mexican filmmaker and I’m sending you this letter with a script, this movie I hope to make as my first film, called Cronos.’ I read the letter and thought, ‘Oh my God, this is like getting a lifetime achievement award.’ Then I read the script and it’s the most beautiful, elegant vampire movie. But it’s not a vampire movie, it’s like if Charles Dickens wrote a vampire film – gothic and layered and very intellectual. We met and that was the beginning, as they say in Casablanca, of a beautiful friendship...Pretty much anything Guillermo offers me, I don’t need to read the script."

Simon Konecki (4/17/1974, Aries Tiger), Adele (5/5/1988, Taurus Dragon) : The superstar singer/songwriter and charity entrepreneur began a relationship in 2011. Their son was born in 2012, and they were married from 2018 until 2021. After their separation, Konecki bought a house across the road from Adele, and the couple share custody. Adele has said about Konecki, "I definitely chose the perfect person to have my child with."

Willow and Jaden Smith
Willow and Jaden Smith (click for attribution/s)

Jaden Smith (7/8/1998, Cancer Tiger), Willow Smith (10/31/2000, Scorpio Dragon) : The two musician/actors are brother and sister. They have spoken several times about the closeness of their relationship, with Willow saying in 2016 that, "We're like binary stars, like two parts of one thing." In 2019, when Jaden was asked about dropping the "Smith" from his name for music streaming, he explained: "You want to know why? Because Willow's name is 'just Willow.' And everything is a character...Jaden and Willow are like a band. Me and Willow are like OutKast except we only ever release individual albums. You remember how OutKast did that one album [Speakerboxxx/The Love Below] where it was like two albums? Yeah. So that's me and Willow. It's like we're not really a band, but we kind of are. It's Jaden and Willow, we have to have the uniform names."

Ryan Phillippe (9/10/1974, Virgo Tiger), Reese Witherspoon (3/22/1976, Aries Dragon) : The two actors were married between 1999 and 2008 and have two children together. While the pair presented together at the 2002 Academy Awards, in an ad-libbed line that Witherspoon later said left her "a little bit flummoxed", Phillippe famously quipped that Witherspoon should present the award because, "You make more than I do. Go ahead." Since their divorce, they have made multiple public appearances with their children and spoken of their respect for each other. Phillippe said in 2014, "[O]ur kids are incredible. I'm proud of the way we've handled it and who our little people are."

Drake and Rihanna

Drake (10/24/1986, Scorpio Tiger), Rihanna (2/20/1988, Pisces Dragon) : The two superstar musicians were long rumored to have a romantic involvement, including at one time being seen with matching tattoos. In 2018, Drake described while on LeBron James' talkshow: "As life takes shape and teaches you your own lessons, I end up in this situation where I don't have the fairy tale, like, 'Oh, Drake started a family with Rihanna and this is like so perfect.' It looks so good on paper. By the way, I wanted that too at one time."

Combined Relationship Horoscope

Final Words

The minor semi-Sextile aspect often needs a head start to find its feet, so it may take a while for firstwest and secondwest to progress beyond initial nervousness to the impactful and nourishing bond they are capable of. The influence of the firsteast and secondeast on the Chinese zodiac side will likely both aid and hinder this process, contributing a blend of caring admiration with respectful distance. Given sensitivity and perseverance, however, on balance the synergies here could lead to a bond that grows ever closer over time, yielding impressive impacts and an enjoyable, reliable bond.
