Both the Western and Chinese zodiacs have a prized place for Trine sign combinations. Cancer and Scorpio, four steps apart on the Western zodiac wheel, form one of these prized matches.
Part of the recipe for harmony between these two signs arises from their shared element of Water. Water contributes essential fluidity and depth to these sensitive, empathic signs. Cancer and Scorpio are both highly attuned to the feelings of others. This is especially so for Cancer, the most impressionable and reactive of all the signs, but strong-willed Scorpio is also deceptively porous—Scorpio may sometimes sting instead of soothe, but they rarely miss their mark. In other company, the responsiveness of Cancer and Scorpio can make them feel crowded or overborne. Imagine their joy, then, when they discover an equally aware, responsive soul. These two will tend to communicate in ways beyond words from the very beginning, sensing a freedom to be completely themselves, as well as a shared respect for interior reflection and peace. Cancer’s love of home, and their instinct to cultivate an independent, dream-filled existence, can provide much-needed calmness to the life of the intense, powerful Scorpio. Scorpio’s uniquely driven, impactful nature gives Cancer confidence and security, while at the same time creating ample space for Cancer to truly understand their own nature in a way they rarely experience with other signs.
The respective modalities here are also marvellously compatible. Cancer is a Cardinal sign, embodying the pure energy of new possibilities and unexplored horizons, while Scorpio’s Fixed character brings the desire for productivity and tangible, real-world accomplishments. Collaborations are thus not only mutually pleasurable and admiring, but also destined to be completed and successful.
There may be no certainty in relationships, but on the Western side, no combination is more conducive to a rewarding and lasting connection than that between Cancer and Scorpio.

Camilla, Queen Consort (7/17/1947, Cancer Pig), King Charles III (11/14/1948, Scorpio Rat) : King Charles III and his wife the Queen Consort have known each other since the 1970s. They were widely rumored to be having an affair during Charles' marriage to Princess Diana Spencer, and married in 2005. Charles has described: "It’s always marvelous to have somebody who, you know, you feel understands and wants to encourage. Although she certainly pokes fun if I get too serious about things. And all that helps."
George W. Bush (7/6/1946, Cancer Dog), Laura Bush (11/4/1946, Scorpio Dog) : The 43rd US President and First Lady have been married since 1977 and have two children. They became engaged after three months of dating. Though they have rarely discussed their relationship in public, in a 2021 interview with his daughter Laura, George W. Bush said: "You should’ve seen your mom [when we met]. Those blue eyes, oh my god...I’ve done a lot of things in my life. And your mom has enabled me to do so in many ways."
Liv Tyler (7/1/1977), Cancer Snake), Joaquin Phoenix (10/28/1974, Scorpio Tiger) : The two actors dated for three years after they started dating while co-starring in Inventing the Abbotts (1997). Phoenix described: "I’m a great believer in people coming into your life, and you into theirs, for a reason. And I know that when Liv and I met, it was for a reason — I really needed her and she really needed me. And at a certain point, I think we stopped evolving with each other, stopped progressing, and made a very mature decision to move on, even though there was still a great love there. There’s no one gossipy thing that I can share. I’m thankful that we had the time we had."
Paul Thomas Anderson (6/26/1970, Cancer Dog), Jonny Greenwood (11/5/1971, Scorpio Pig) : The director and composer have collaborated four times, on the films There Will Be Blood (2007), The Master (2012), Inherent Vice (2014), and Phantom Thread (2017). Greenwood has described: "[Y]ou should know that whenever you’re in the edit [room] with Paul he is — without exception — laughing throughout...He’s the whole package — scripts, cinematography, storytelling, humor, romance, oddness, and genuity. There’s no one like him: Perhaps there’s people who do the individual skills as well — or better— but no one has the full deck like Paul. I’m glad he’s terrible at playing musical instruments; there’s a job left for me."
Tobey Maguire (6/27/1975, Cancer Rabbit), Leonardo DiCaprio (11/11/1974, Scorpio Tiger) : The two actors have been close friends since they were teenagers. They have also worked together on several occasions, including co-starring in The Great Gatsby (2013). Maguire has described: "[Leo and I] are like any other buddies. There's a lot of laughing and chatting between us. We enjoy doing a lot of things we have in common, like basketball. We like to play and talk about basketball.."
Carly Simon (6/25/1945, Cancer Rooster), Mike Nichols (11/6/1931, Scorpio Sheep) : The singer/songwriter and film director were friends who collaborated extensively, including on the films Working Girl (1988), Heartburn (1986), and Postcards from the Edge (1990). After Nichols died in 2014, Simon wrote: "[Nichols] was the biggest influence in my adult life. Like a father or older brother to me. Giving me advice and when I didn’t take it, he’d smile the most understanding smile and say: 'You see, I warned you!!!' It was never mean or patronizing. His charm and wit are famous. I saw him so many times in the flesh, just sitting still, not knowing he was being watched. I felt his deep thoughts and observations without knowing what they were specifically."
Joanne Tucker (6/26/1982, Cancer Dog), Adam Driver (11/19/1983, Scorpio Pig) : The two actors were a longtime couple before they married in 2013. As well as acting together several times, they co-founded the organization Arts in the Armed Forces in 2006. Their first child was born in secret, with Driver explaining, "My job is to be a spy — to be in public and live life and have experience. But, when you feel like you’re the focus, it’s really hard to do that." In a monologue on SNL in 2020, Driver said to laughter: "I’m a husband and a father. It’s in that order though. I’ve been very clear with my son about that. He’s second to everything."
Lisa Rinner (7/11/1963, Cancer Rabbit), Harry Hamlin (10/30/1951, Scorpio Rabbit) : The two actors married in 1997 and have two children. They have also collaborated on multiple occasions, including on the reality TV series, Harry Loves Lisa (2010). Rinner has described: "We are crazy about each other, and you can't create that, you can't make it — it either is, or it isn't … I think you either really dig somebody, or you don't. And I'm so blessed, we are so blessed that that happened for us."

Tiger and Rooster
Compatibility overview
Although Chinese astrology is often split between polar extremes, the combination of the firsteast and secondeast is more nebulous. There are some quite stark differences between these signs, which can make it challenging to develop long-term closeness. However, mutual admiration and warmth are common, and may produce significant lasting benefits.

Compatibility in the Chinese zodiac depends mainly on the four Trine Families. Relations between the Rooster's family (with the Ox and Snake) and the Tiger's (with the Dog and Horse) are generally quite difficult, and some combinations in this group are especially risky (e.g., the Rooster and the Dog, or the Tiger and the Snake). Fortunately, the Rooster and Tiger enjoy synergies that make it easy to establish friendly relations.
Notably, strong visual appeal is characteristic of both the Rooster and Tiger. Whilst their modes of presentation may be different—the Rooster is known for fashion-conscious pizzazz, where the Tiger leans more towards noble authority—both possess a commanding social presence. They are likely to notice and approve of one another before they have spoken a word. These signs also share a commitment to hard work and excellence that can be highly complementary, at least in the short term. The Rooster may be dazzling in self-presentation, but they are also virtually indefatigable when they apply themselves to a task. The Tiger is more inconsistent—their fearlessness makes them prone to injuring themselves, and they can be distracted when angry or frustrated—yet they are equally capable of prodigious, incisive efforts when they are motivated and healthy. Hence both signs are likely to be deeply impressed by the extent and quality of what the other is able to achieve.
Tensions between the Rooster and Tiger often do not rise to the surface, and are more likely to produce a respectful distance than outright conflict. The Rooster is highly attuned to social dynamics, a context in which they often manage a unique role as student and master at the same time. The Tiger, by contrast, tends to think of their noble ideals as transcending social currencies or the fashions of the day. Thus, though they might rarely say so out loud, the Rooster can find the Tiger to be somewhat judgmental or irrelevant, while the Tiger may think of the Rooster as facile or lacking true conviction. These signs also tend to be very caught up in their own worlds. With each being quite self-involved, they can find it difficult to meet in the middle beyond occasional collaborations or meetings. Happily, the commonalities here mean that time spent together is usually enjoyable and rewarding, and both Rooster and Tiger are likely to know when enough is enough.
With sensitivity and plenty of independence, supportive warmth and enjoyable banter can be a hallmark of this relationship.

Jodie Foster (11/19/1962, Scorpio Tiger), Alexandra Hedison (7/10/1969, Cancer Rooster) : The actor and photographer have been married since 2014. Though the couple are famously private, after Foster was nominated for a Golden Globe for The Mauritanian (2021), Hedison posted a photo with the caption: "What happens in quarantine stays in quarantine. Every day I'm a proud wife but today you get a special shout out in the remote land of [Instagram]...I'll have to show you my phone for you to see this but still...I'm shouting from the rooftops."
Rebecca Miller (9/15/1962, Virgo Tiger), Daniel Day-Lewis (4/29/1957, Taurus Rooster) : The actor and filmmaker/novelist have been married since 1996 and have two children. Though they have rarely discussed their relationship publicly, Miller mentioned in a 2018 interview that she had refused to allow the famously method-acting Day-Lewis to stay in character at home: "I was just like, 'That’s not going to happen.' It’s good to at least maintain one personality for your child." She also referred to a recent trip to their home in Ireland: "[W]e went and got hot whiskeys in a pub in Ireland. And we walked up a mountain and then we got our hot whiskeys and then we got our scones with cream. That’s the kind of thing of just simplicity and fun."
Miles Davis (5/26/1926, Gemini Tiger), Quincy Jones (3/14/1933, Pisces Rooster) : The jazz icon and music producer were longtime friends who collaborated on Davis' final live performance, later released as Miles & Quincy Live at Montreux (1993). The concert marked the first and only time Davis ever revisited music from his back catalogue. Jones described: "I had been trying for 15 years to get him to do that. I've known Miles all my life, we were close friends; I was there in the recording session in 1958 when they did Miles Ahead (1958) with Gil Evans conducting—it was amazing. I said, 'Dewey, this one we've got to do a tribute to.' We kept talking and talking, we were at his home in Central Park West—he was upstairs with Flavor Flav putting an album together—he says 'man this [project] is going to be expensive... and it's hard to play.' Finally, I got him to say yes—I know Miles—and it was fantastic. Man, he played very softly, with no vibrato or anything. That night, I waved and said 'Miles Davis' [to the crowd] and he waved his towel at this audience—I've never seen him do that before—and he growled 'screw you' at me."
Mel Brooks (6/28/1926, Cancer Tiger), David Lynch (1/20/1946, Aquarius Rooster) : The producer and director formed a famously unlikely partnership when they collaborated to make Lynch's script into the award-winning film, The Elephant Man (1980). Speaking about an early meeting, Brooks described: "I wasn't expecting [Lynch] to be so polite, but I was rather impressed. He made sense and was very savvy about the changes he wanted. It was a problem: how does a guy who is known for the best fart jokes in cinema go on to make The Elephant Man? I had all along the line assiduously kept my name from the project. But after this one conversation, David knew I had more to me. I guess it was the outsider aspect that appealed to him. And that's where I think we met, mentally." Lynch said later: "[Brooks] backed me in ways you can’t imagine — people wanted to change this, do this, give me all kinds of hell — never would Mel let it happen...It put me on the map, it was a great experience…it was just a blessing!"
Queen Elizabeth II (4/21/1926, Taurus Tiger), Prince Philip (6/10/1921, Gemini Rooster) : The Queen and Prince Philip were married for 73 years until his death in 2021. According to a report in The Guardian, published when their engagement was announced in 1947: "It is clearly a marriage of choice, not of arrangement...There have been many royal engagements in the past, but it would be hard to find a precise parallel for that of an Heiress Presumptive and still more for her choice as partner of one who is, technically at least, a British commoner."
Marilyn Monroe (6/1/1926, Gemini Tiger), Yves Montand (10/13/1921, Libra Rooster) : The two actors had a well-publicized affair during the making of one of Monroe's last films, Let's Make Love (1960). Montand later described: "[Marilyn] had an immense character, an extremely strong nature—even though, in life as on the screen, she had that little girl voice. The fascination she exercised and her seductive power were present almost without her knowing it...She had no need to check the seam of her stocking to give you ideas: when she talked about the rain or the fine weather or the cafeteria menu, she had the same power...Marilyn was a being apart, in the sense that it was her own inner light that drove her into the spotlight. If you believed in God you’d say that God alone could generate such a light—a light beyond the control of those it burns in."

Final Words
A Trine combination, one of a very small few who share perfectly harmonious elements and modalities, firstwest and secondwest are born allies who can usually be trusted to engage, excite, and depend on each other from the get-go. The pairing of firsteast and secondeast provides a more equivocal influence, one based more on particular affinities between their characters than general good fortune, which can be more conducive to admiring comrades than bosom friendship. Overall, though, the superb influence of firstwest and secondwest creates the conditions for all kinds of successes here.
