Among their many collaborations, they worked together on the so-called, "Pioneer plaque", a metal plaque sent into space in 1972/1973, which was intended to notify possible extraterrestrial beings about humankind. They met after Joe Biden's first wife and their daughter were killed in an automobile accident, and faced tragedy again when Joe Biden's son from his first marriage, Beau, died of brain cancer in 2015.
