An interval of two steps around the zodiac wheel, as there is between Aquarius and Aries, forms a Sextile combination. This energy is famously easygoing, providing plenty of space for both signs to be themselves without worrying that they will be judged or constrained.
Aquarius' intellectual nature and desire to seek out universal truths means they are usually fascinated, and greatly inspired, by the vast ambitions and dynamism of Aries. Aries, on the other hand, tends to both admire and be comforted by Aquarius' receptiveness to new ideas and free-thinking approach to life. Aries' impactful nature and child-like sense of wonder can be demanding for many signs, but Aquarius' famous capacity for acceptance means they are rarely disturbed by Aries' intensity. The result is often a relationship full of humor, pleasure, and relaxation.
Aquarius' Air is naturally the most compatible of the four elements, and is especially harmonious with Aries’ Fire. Further, Aries’ Cardinal modality blends beautifully with the Fixed energy of Aquarius, forming a natural sequence from initiation to realization. These two thus tend to respect rather than to feel threatened by each other's contrasting instincts, and may be naturally curious to see how combining forces might harness their prospects for mutual success. Collaborations tend not only to be great fun, but also productive and impactful.
Perhaps ironically, the risks for Sextile matches like this stem from the same features of the relationship that make it most enjoyable. This encouraging, enjoyable atmosphere can sometimes be taken for granted, particularly if other relationships seem more pressing. Sometimes both signs later regret not giving this connection the priority it deserved.
Fortunately, the energy between Aquarius and Aries is usually very reliable. Whether they see each other once a blue moon or every day, these two can be expected to access easily the nourishing warmth and mutual reassurance that characterizes their special connection.

Gregory Peck (4/5/1916, Aries Dragon), Veronique Passani (2/5/1932, Aquarius Sheep) : The Hollywood icon met his second wife when she interviewed him for a French publication. They were married for 48 years until his death in 2003 at age 87. During their marriage, Passani described: "Gregory can be as quiet as a meditating monk. But he can also talk a blue streak. He is very sophisticated; he also is a person of basically simple tastes. He is methodical—and also unregimented...He is conservative about financial matters. But he can spend money with reckless abandon. In other words, he [is] more complex and contradictory than Hollywood shows him." Peck said about their relationship, "When I’m overtaken with myself and think that something’s very heavy to deal with, she will pull off an imitation of me in a dark mood and suddenly I’ll find myself laughing."
Heath Ledger (4/4/1979, Aries Sheep), Heather Graham (1/29/1970, Aquarius Rooster) : The two actors dated in the early 2000s, and Graham continues to reflect fondly on her former love who died tragically young. "Just remembering this time," Graham wrote in 2021. "Heath Ledger was such a special person."
David Tennant (4/18/1971, Aries Pig), Michael Sheen (2/5/1969, Aquarius Monkey) : The two British actors bonded during the making of the show Good Omens, then reunited for the successful lockdown TV series Staged. Discussing their collaboration on Good Omens, Sheen described: "I like the choices that David makes and I think he felt the same way, so there was a similar taste. So, it was a really lovely opportunity. But like I say, even with all of that, you still don't know if there's going to be actual chemistry - we've known each other for a long time so we knew we liked each other, but working together is a different thing...It is quite rare and we were very fortunate."
Matthew Broderick (3/21/1962, Aries Tiger), Nathan Lane (2/3/1956, Aquarius Sheep) : The two actors famously co-starred in the Broadway production, The Producers, which ran for 2,502 performances. They teamed up again on Broadway for It's Only a Play (2014). Asked about their frequent collaborations, Broderick described: "Nathan’s laser-like precision and his atomic-clock timing are exhilarating, and you know that this is a precious rare opportunity to mix it up with a great one. I can’t wait to see what he does in the years to come; I look forward to watching him and even more, taking the field right next to him."
Vince Vaughn (3/28/1970, Aries Dog), Jennifer Aniston (2/11/1969, Aquarius Monkey) : These celebrity A-listers had a short-lived but high-profile relationship in the early 2000s, following Aniston's divorce from Brad Pitt. "I call Vince my defibrillator," Aniston said later. "He literally brought me back to life."
Reese Witherspoon (3/22/1976, Aries Dragon), Kerry Washington (1/31/1977, Aquarius Dragon) : The two actors memorably appeared together in Little Fires Everywhere. Washington described, "[I]t has been exciting for me to do this...To be working with a woman like Reese, who is not afraid to take up space, who's not afraid for the other women around her to take up just as much space and to have a voice as loud as hers."
Amy Wright (4/15/1950, Aries Tiger), Rip Torn (2/6/1931, Aquarius Horse) : The two actors were married for 30 years, from 1989 until his death in 2019, and had two children together. Their relationship was famously unconventional—they had a child together while Torn was married to the actor Geraldine Page (to whom Torn was married until Page's death in 1987), and both collaborated with Page on a series of stage productions. Wright described shortly before their marriage: "[Torn] is a lusty guy. He likes to have a good time, to laugh and drink and eat. He likes women. People think of him as a hot-tempered person, but he is really rather gentle. Our problem is that we come from different generations and different cultures. That makes it hard to communicate sometimes."

Compatibility overview
Western astrology is generally more forgiving of potential discord than its Chinese counterpart. Unfortunately, the match between the firsteast and the secondeast has a reputation for seriously destabilizing energy. This can produce a myriad of conflicts. The prognosis is not all negative, however. For as unsettling as it can be for the parties themselves, this match-up is capable of generating some awesomely powerful impacts.

Facing each other diametrically across the Chinese zodiac wheel are the six infamous Opposite combinations. Traditionally, these matches are understood to involve nearly constant and irreconcilable tension. In the case of the Horse and the Rat, the dashing independence of the former collides with the latter's calculating cleverness.
The Horse is perhaps the sign with the greatest need for freedom. It is almost impossible for them to feel comfortable if they sense they are being controlled. The Rat, on the other hand, is a profoundly social, romantic creature. Their inner fulfilment depends on closeness to others and being able to use their strategic skills to promote their own interests and those close to them. A combination of the Horse and Rat thus tends to produce a vicious circle where both are constantly on edge. The Horse can feel restricted and manipulated, where the Rat feels abandoned, vulnerable, and unappreciated.
Recurrent problems are especially a feature of love affairs. The old adage about opposites attracting can draw these two together initially, and strong sexual tension is not unexpected. But eventually the Horse's craving for independence is likely to lead to withdrawal or selfishness. The neglected Rat may become increasingly needy and could even turn to scheming against the distant, aloof Horse.
Characteristically for Opposite matches, however, the troublesome aspects of this energy can generate extraordinarily potent results. Imagine partner stand-ups, where the force of two people pushing backwards into each other propels them upward. Because the Horse and Rat have so little in common, any kind of collaboration, alliance, even feud, that brings them together benefits from a complete spectrum of energy. The potential for capturing attention or generating triumphs of innovation is virtually unlimited.
To be sure, the partnership may prove too combative for the parties themselves to really enjoy each other's successes. But with soothing influences on the Western side, or earnest mutual understanding, these two may be able to profit admirably from the powerful, if conflictive, energy that unites them.

Sean Penn (8/17/1960, Leo Rat), Robin Wright (4/8/1966, Aries Horse) : The two actors shared an on-off relationship from 1989 to 1995 and had two children together. After separating in 1995, they reconciled and married in 1996. They filed for divorce in 2007, reconciled again for a time, and finally divorced in 2010. Penn said in 2018, "[We] don't have a lot of conversation...We don’t not get along. We have very separate relationships with our kids at this point and it seems to work better that way because they are making their own decisions. As it turned out she and I did not share the same ethical views on parenting, including the continuing parenting of adult children."
David Duchovny (8/7/1960, Leo Rat), Téa Leoni (2/25/1966, Pisces Horse) : The two actors married in 1997 and had two children together. They separated in 2008 before Duchovny received treatment for sex addiction. After reuniting for a time, they divorced in 2014. Leoni has described: "David gave me the two greatest gifts on the planet; I don't know how I could ever hate him...I'm not playing stupid—I understand feelings can get hurt and things can get icky. We've had our moments like that. But these kids are too important, and he feels the same way."
Carmelo Anthony (5/29/1984, Gemini Rat), Kobe Bryant (8/23/1978, Virgo Horse) : These US basketball legends shared an amicable but heated on-court rivalry, especially during the 2009 Western Conference Finals. Anthony has described: "You know Kob, man, he going at your neck. He’s saying [expletive] to you, elbowing you. I had my braids back then too, so he’s touching my head. I’m like, 'What the [expletive] are you doing? Don’t touch my head.' You know what I’m saying? Like, 'Don’t touch me no more, dawg.'" When the pair faced each other, they would embrace and say, "It's war."
Jennifer Garner (4/17/1972, Aries Rat), Halle Berry (8/14/1966, Leo Horse) : The two actors testified together before a California State Assembly Committee about the need for their children to be legally protected from the paparazzi. Berry said at one point, "We're moms here, just trying to protect our children."
Clarence Thomas (6/23/1948, Cancer Rat), Sonia Sotomayor (6/25/1954, Cancer Horse) : These US Supreme Court judges have starkly different reputations. However, while alluding to conflicts about judicial business, Sotomayor has spoken of the friendship between them: "I see in [Thomas] the basic caring about people that I have. We are both committed friends and committed family members. And so, in seeing that good in him, there is no reason for me to take our personal disputes and translate it into our personal interactions. We work together. We have to work together for the rest of our time on the court."
Marlon Brando (4/3/1924, Aries Rat), James Dean (2/8/1931, Aquarius Horse) : There have been rumours that these two actors shared a disturbing intimate relationship, with Brando attempting to dominate Dean in various ways. What is more certain is that Dean idolized Brando, copying his choices of motorcycle and bongo-playing hobby, while Brando made publicly disparaging comments about Dean. "Mr. Dean appears to be wearing my last year's wardrobe and using my last year's talent," is one quote attributed to Brando; "I gave [Dean] the name of a psycho-analyst and he went. At least his work improved," is another.

Final Words
The energy between firstwest and secondwest reflects their Sextile aspect—in almost any context, they are likely to be trusted allies, sharing easygoing humor and having each other’s backs through thick and thin. Here, though, the influence on the Chinese zodiac side tells a very different story, for the firsteast and the secondeast are true Opposites, often locked in an explosive cycle of difference and conflict. There is real potential here—the firsteast and secondeast can be wildly successful if they manage to unite in common enterprise—but it may be essential to focus on the peaceable effects of the firstwest/secondwest match to achieve stability.
