Western zodiac signs that are five steps apart, like Gemini and Scorpio, form a Quincunx (or inconjunct) aspect. Right from the start, this so-called minor influence—one of only two, with the Semi-sextile—gives this relationship a somewhat shapeless character, one that can be liberating, confusing, or both.

To be sure, there are some striking differences here. Gemini is an Air sign, a freedom-loving traveler, with a keen intellectual interest in just about anything and everything. Water sign Scorpio, by contrast, is a powerful, often brooding soul, known for their deep emotions and undeniable force of will. Air and water are generally more conflictive than harmonious. Hence Gemini's instincts can often seem flighty and distracting to the serious-minded Scorpio, while Scorpio's intensity can try Gemini's patience, and make them feel closed-in or exhausted. These signs are both known for their tempers when roused, too, so differences of opinion could produce some spectacular fireworks!

The beguiling energy of the Quincunx, however, means the differences here are often experienced with enjoyment, even fascination. Sexual chemistry is likely. The atmosphere of mutual puzzlement may be more likely to produce humor or banter than crossness or aggression. The secret weapon of this relationship, indeed, is the two signs' deeply compatible modalities.

Scorpio have their Fixed nature to thank for their determination and impact, while Gemini's more reflective Mutable personality means they are ever alert to consequences, implications, and effects. Thus, provided their differences are sensitively managed—independence and kindness will probably be essential—teamwork between these two can be startlingly effective. Frank Drake (5/28/1930, Gemini Horse), Carl Sagan (11/9/1934, Scorpio Dog) : The two astrophysicists were both professors at Cornell University. As Drake described in his book, Is Anyone Out There? (1992), "[E]vents conspir[ed] to bring us together as lifelong colleagues." Among their many collaborations, they worked together on the so-called, "Pioneer plaque", a metal plaque sent into space in 1972/1973, which was intended to notify possible extraterrestrial beings about humankind. Drake described: "Carl asked me to work with him on the message. The next session of the astronomical meeting was almost ready to begin. Participants bustled past us with empty cups and saucers...The ‘Yes, of course’ wasn’t even out of my mouth before the two of us started firing ideas at each other about what we would include…We could even make line drawings of human figures—and we immediately agreed to do so. In the next moment, we hit on the idea of a galactic map that would pinpoint the location of the Earth in space."

Jill Biden (6/3/1951, Gemini Rabbit), Joe Biden (11/20/1942, Scorpio Horse) : The U.S. President and First Lady married in 1977. They met after Joe Biden's first wife and their daughter were killed in an automobile accident, and faced tragedy again when Joe Biden's son from his first marriage, Beau, died of brain cancer in 2015. In a joint interview during his presidency, Joe Biden said in 2021: "[Jill] has a backbone like a ramrod. Everybody says marriage is 50/50. Well, sometimes you have to be 70/30.
