In Part 1 of our review of the Year of the Dragon, we focused on the individual signs likely to profit from this exuberant and dynamic energy this Chinese year—especially the Monkey, Rat, and Rooster. Some of the celebrities we singled out as attracting potentially favorable energy have already been making powerful waves. Zendaya (09/01/1996, Virgo Rat), for example, has topped the box office in Dune II (2024), and is also winning critical acclaim for Challengers (2024). Perhaps even more notably, Beyoncé’s (09/04/1981, Virgo Rooster) Americana-infused new album, Cowboy Carter (2024), has been hailed a contemporary “masterpiece”, an assertive “[reclamation of] Black music in America.”

In this second part of our Year of the Dragon series, we move from individuals to pairs. For there is something in the magic of the Dragon that seems especially relevant when it comes to power couples. Interestingly, and not for nothing, do we see an extraordinary number of Roosters in famous power couples!

Beginning with Beyoncé herself, she and husband Jay-Z (12/04/1969, Sagittarius Rooster) both possess this year’s highly-favored Rooster energy on the Chinese side. That they share this incredibly fashionable, yet equally hard-working and commercially savvy sign will come as no surprise, given their respective artistic and economic achievements. Indeed, part of this couple’s extraordinary impact has arguably involved leveraging the tensions in their relationship to maximize their combined popular appeal. A pair of Roosters usually share a bedrock of common values, but they may sometimes have to navigate quite extreme self-absorption and opposing visions of self-presentation. Such challenges can be especially acute where there is combative Square energy on the Western side, as there is between Beyoncé’s Virgo and Jay-Z’s Sagittarius. With their respective albums Lemonade (2016) and 4:44 (2017), these two musical and business luminaries seemed to achieve one of the most triumphant expositions of warts-and-all combined energy in history. Having the auspicious energy of the Dragon at their backs in 2024, there is no telling what heights they could scale to—separately, and together.

Other celebrity power couples seem to be in a rare position to profit from Dragon energy.

After ascending to the highest American political circles during the 2016–2020 Trump administration, Ivanka Trump (10/30/1981, Scorpio Rooster) and husband Jared Kushner (01/10/1981, Capricorn Monkey) were said to be in “exile” after the 2020 election. Yet as well as sharing highly compatible energy between them, this pairing of the Rooster and Monkey signs has the potential to be doubly fortunate this election year. Of course, whether it would be luckier from their perspective for Donald Trump (06/14/1946, Gemini Dog) to win at the polls this November is a question that is perhaps more complicated than it first appears. (Stay tuned for a forthcoming feature in which we consider in greater depth what it truly means to say that a sign may attract good or bad fortune in any given year.)

Other high-profile relationships seem uncannily apt to find good fortune this year. Meghan Markle (08/04/1981, Leo Rooster) and Prince Harry (09/15/1984, Virgo Rat) illustrate again how a couple with strong mutual energy can also attract the most promising energy in Chinese astrology, given the powerful Dragon/Rat and Dragon/Rooster combinations. Indeed, the same matrix of energy on the Chinese side bodes extremely well this year for that second-chance-at-love pin-up couple, Jennifer Lopez (07/24/1969, Leo Rooster) and Ben Affleck (08/15/1972, Leo Rat). It seems that time may have helped to soothe the own-sign tensions of Leo/Leo for this pairing, who overall share terrific prospects, and the sky may well be the limit in 2024.

And last but far from least among the lucky Rooster/Rat combinations this year is the pairing of Ellen DeGeneres (01/26/1958, Aquarius Rooster) and Portia de Rossi (01/31/1973, Aquarius Rat). All being well, these well-matched Aquarians ought to have plenty to look forward to this Dragon year.

Stay tuned for Part 3 of our Year of the Dragon series, when we turn our attention to the other side of the coin—the signs facing headwinds this year…
