In Part 1 of our series on megastar Taylor Swift (12/13/1989, Sagittarius Snake), we looked at how Swift has revolutionized the role of a woman turning her lived experiences into art. With the release of her new double album, The Tortured Poets Department (2024), this week, the spotlight has shone even brighter on her past and current loves. Media and fans alike have been poring over the lyrics of the album’s 31 tracks for clues about Swift’s private life and relationships.

From the perspective of astrology, Swift’s public experiences—and her own documenting of them—provide fascinating insights into her own and others’ energy matrixes. A natural starting point is her current intimate connection with NFL tight end, Travis Kelce (10/05/1989, Libra Snake). People magazine reports a strong correlation between Swift and Kelce’s relationship and her new song, “So High School” (2024). This includes the lyrics:

Get my car door, isn’t that sweet? / Then pull me to the backsеat / No one’s evеr had me, not like you…Truth, dare, spin bottles / You know how to ball, I know Aristotle / Touch me while your bros play Grand Theft Auto.

The energy match between Swift and Kelce suggests precisely this kind of jocular yet rock-solid dependability. This is especially so on the Western side, where the Sextile energy between Sagittarius and Libra is famously relaxed, affectionate, and ever-reliable. Yet the own-sign pairing of two souls born in the Snake year also suggests potential for extensive common ground, although in these lyrics the jock masculinity of Kelce’s day-to-day social life is definitely on show. The philosophical dimension of this energy is certainly less obvious on the surface with footballer Kelce. However, Swift’s lyrics imply a welcome respectfulness, and appreciation of her more academic philosophical bent, as well as the unsurprisingly powerful sexual connection that is almost inevitable with a pair of Snakes—at least for a time.

Interestingly, Swift is no stranger to this exact energy match. One of her most famous relationships—immortalized in her song, “Dear John” (2010)—was with musician John Mayer, who is amazingly, like Kelce, also a Libra Snake (10/16/1977). Almost exactly 12 years older than Kelce, Mayer’s relationship with Swift seemed for a time to devolve into the kind of wounded jealousy which is probably the Snake sign’s most well-known vulnerability. However, in recent times, Swift’s conspicuous support for Mayer seems more consistent with the kind of having-each-other’s-backs resilience that is customary for Sextile Western energy.

On the subject of own-sign relationships gone wrong, fans are speculating (according to the New York Times) that some of the most aggrieved songs on The Tortured Poets Department—including “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived” and “The Black Dog”—are about the 1975 frontman, Matty Healey (04/08/1989, Aries Snake). Swift’s energy match with Healey has spectacular Trine energy on the Western side thanks to the shared element of Fire. Yet, as Swift seems to have repeatedly experienced, the own-sign match of Snake and Snake can be a mixed bag of sparkly attraction and closeness on one hand, and jealousy and mistrust on the other.

Swift’s other relationships appear more diverse energy-wise. One of her longest known relationships, with Englishman Joe Alwyn (02/21/1991, Pisces Sheep), is thought to have inspired The Tortured Poets Department’s, “So Long, London”. The lyrics to that song include some sombre reflections, such as:

I saw in my mind fairy lights through the mist / I kept calm and carried the weight of the rift / Pulled him in tighter each time he was driftin’ away / My spine split from carrying us up the hill / Wet through my clothes, weary bones caught the chill / I stopped tryna make him laugh, stopped tryna drill the safe

Perhaps not surprisingly, the energy match between Swift and Alwyn is one of the most challenging, at least in theory, that the songwriter has faced. On the Chinese side, the Snake and Sheep match can often function most effectively at a distance. Although mutual admiration is strongly indicated, different values can surface around finances, fidelity, or compassion versus pragmatism. Perhaps more tellingly, the Square connection between Sagittarius and Pisces can be one of the most difficult to manage in the Western zodiac. Although personal growth can be profound, Square energy can, even with the best will in the world, make it difficult to agree about much of anything.

Finally, it is possible that many of Swift’s apparently most fleeting love relationships may have had the greatest potential from an astrological perspective. The songstress is thought to have dated actor Jake Gyllenhaal (12/19/1980, Sagittarius Monkey) in 2010/2011. Swift and Gyllenhaal share not only the camaraderie of their common Sagittarius sign, but also the magical, if demanding, potential of the Soulmate energy between the Snake and Monkey. Then there are Swift’s relationships with Harry Styles (02/01/1994, Aquarius Rooster) and Tom Hiddleston (02/09/1981, Aquarius Rooster), whom Swift is believed to have dated in 2012 and 2016 respectively. Singer Styles and actor Hiddleston are (also amazingly!) both born under the combined sign of Aquarius Rooster. This means their energy with Swift comprises both the enjoyable reliability of the Sextile Sagittarius/Aquarius combination on the Western side, and the first-class Trine match of Snake and Rooster on the Chinese side.

Happily, the relationship of Swift’s that seems to have blossomed into an enduring friendship is arguably the one that stands on the strongest astrological footing. In the song, “Back to December” (2010), Swift sings wistfully,

And I go back to December all the time / It turns out freedom ain’t nothin’ but missin’ you / Wishin’ I’d realized what I had when you were mine / I’d go back to December, turn around and make it alright / I go back to December all the time

It is widely believed that the song is about a brief relationship between Swift and the actor Taylor Lautner (02/11/1992, Aquarius Monkey). Their combination of Sextile and Soulmate energy is highly favorable, and appears to have contributed to a warm and lasting attachment. Speaking in 2023, Lautner reportedly said:

[Swift] deserves everything that she is getting and going through right now because she’s the hardest-working person. And just being at the pinnacle that she’s at right now, the way that she carries herself and is just so gracious and kind to absolutely everyone, no matter who you are, it speaks to her character. And that’s the greatest part about her in my opinion.
